Portrait Photography - Some Useful Suggestions
People have been the theme of many famous photographs from time to time. However, portrait photography isn’t just about capturing a face; instead it is about making a person or a group of people come alive in a image by showing them in their splendour.
A well done portrait photograph doesn’t follow convention, and shows the person in a mental state that makes the picture distinctive. However, photographs of one person or of entire families are also clicked by photographers, and these are normally preserved in family albums.
An appropriate close up bringing the person’s face into prominence differentiates a truly professional portrait photograph from one that has been casually clicked. This is achieved by an old camera trick of making the background a little bit foggy and indistinct so that the person’s face gets the maximum focus. This job of highlighting the face becomes easier with a camera having a larger aperture. However, in some portraits where the individual needs to be seen as part of the background, especially in photographs taken outdoors, a standard aperture serves the purpose better.
Photography is all about absorption of light into the photographic medium; thus insufficient light has always been a photographer’s cause of concern. However, by following some basic photography tips, a decent portrait photograph can be obtained. A facial profile of a subject sitting by a window looks extraordinary and appealing, particularly when daylight illuminates a side of the face. A reflective surface can be used to light up the other side of the individual’s face. However, portrait photography is best done in studios as lights can be regulated there.
Another significant factor that affects a portrait photograph is the ease of the subject when he or she poses for the image. If the subject doesn’t feel at ease while being shot and doesn’t give a natural expression, then even the highest quality camera and lighting methods will fail to do justice to the portrait.
